Eight of West Irondequoit’s 10 schools earned a Top 20 spot in Buffalo Business First’s annual ratings of Rochester-area schools, and Briarwood elementary (5th out of 162) and Irondequoit High School (9th out of 88) were rated in the Top 10. For the sixth straight year, the West Irondequoit Central School District rated seventh out of 67 districts.

Buffalo Business First uses its own formula to produce its public schools ratings, which for Rochester cover an eight-county area. Mostly, they’re based on standardized test scores and graduation rates from the New York State Department of Education over a specified period of time. For the 2020 ratings, the data was generated from 2016-19.

Six of the WICSD’s 10 schools either improved their rating or stayed the same. No schools ranked outside the Top 40. Noteworthy jumps among elementary schools included Brookview up 17 spots to No. 37 and Seneca up nine spots to No. 40. Briarwood ranked No. 1 last year, which was the first time any WICSD school achieved the top spot since the district began tracking the ratings in 2013. In BBF’s other district-level ratings, West Irondequoit received five stars for English and four stars apiece for math, science and social studies.
