Three new Student Reps to our Board of Education

Meet our 3 new student Board of Education representatives

The West Irondequoit Board of Education not only welcomed and honored new teachers/staff at Thursday’s meeting, but it also introduced its three new student representatives, seniors Ms. Grace Loeser, Mr. Ethan Riester and Ms. Claire Steckley. Each were sworn as members.

Having three students required a change in board policy that limited it previously to just two. “The Board of Education wanted to create the flexibility to extend the opportunity to more students, so they changed board policy,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Aaron Johnson, noting that up to three students may serve. “The Board also has expanded the engagement opportunities for the students to include them in more discussions, local advocacy efforts and professional development opportunities.”

There’s another new twist: Each student will be paired with a Board of Education member as their mentor.

As in the past, the representatives will be the “voice of our student body,” reporting to the Board at its regular meetings. They’ll also meet monthly with administrators, teachers and interview students in each of our 10 buildings.
