Key Points

  • Role of assessment in West Irondequoit
  • -Way to evaluate Reading/writing/thinking/problem-solving linked to teaching practice
    -Allows for feedback to students
    -Informs teaching practice
-Supports improved instruction, which then improves student learning
-Assessment is not a bad word!

  • Standardized state assessments are only one piece to the puzzle-they don't measure everything and should be viewed accordingly.

  • Good News!
-Teacher evaluations are no longer linked to Grades 3-8 ELA/ math state assessments
-Significant decrease in needless assessments related to teacher evaluations (pre-testing and post-testing).

  • Test refusal is a parent/family choice. However, if more than 5% of students refuse to take state assessments, this refusal could result in a loss of federal funds to local districts.
