Irondequoit Students Collect Coins to Aid Refugees Across the Globe

April 9, 2009

The freshman class at Irondequoit High School has found a way to make a difference in the world. With the help of social studies teacher Lara Schuler and class advisor Denee Green they began a fundraiser for the organization Nothing But Nets. In just one and one-half weeks, the students collected $840 in coins! A friendly competition between Global Studies social studies classes helped to move the process along, with the winning class raising $150.

Nothing But Nets, sponsored by the United Nations Foundation, distributes mosquito nets to refugees in Africa. The nets, used to cover beds; protect against malaria. Malaria is the leading killer of refugees in Africa. Just $10 provides a net that can protect a family for up to four years.
