  • Six students earn trip to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim.

  • Business students from Irondequoit High School competed in the 2009 DECA State Career Conference Competition on Wednesday, March 4th through Friday, March 6th. The event took place at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and had over 2,000 business students participating from schools around New York State.

DECA (an association for marketing students) was organized in 1946 around an ambitious goal: to improve educational and career opportunities in marketing, management and entrepreneurship for students. In the years since, DECA has remained on the cutting edge of educational innovation, working with the business community to integrate academic achievement with career and technical skills. Information about DECA can be viewed at www.newyorkdeca.org and www.deca.org.

There are more than 50 different competitive marketing events for students to participate in and learn about the field of marketing. Forty-eight Irondequoit Business students traveled to the convention center to test their knowledge in their chosen event, which includes both team and individual events. Each of these students qualified to compete at the state level through their performance at the regional level or they prepared a business plan to defend it in front of an industry expert as a direct entry.

Junior, Barb Bianchi, campaigned to be elected to the Executive Council for NY DECA. She received enough votes from the student voting delegates to win the Vice President position for next year’s 2009-20010 DECA school year. She also will be attending ICDC to attend state officer leadership training and represent NYS as a national voting delegate.

Co-advisor Lou DiCesare also was recognized at the conference and received NY DECA’s Outstanding Service Award. Each year the Board of Directors for New York DECA votes to recognize no more than two individuals each year who have demonstrated continued service to New York DECA and it's programs.
